Health Check Tuesday: Vitamin D3, Are You Getting Enough?

Afternoon everyone, trust you all are have a bright and cheery day so far.  I can’t believe how pretty it is outside, not that I can go out and enjoy it. But just looking out through the window it looks lovely out! Surely some of you have been able to get out and enjoy this fine sunny weather today 🙂

Since I can’t get out to soak up some natural Vitamin D from the sun, mosquitoes, I have to get my Vitamin D in pill form. I originally take D3 to help regulate my menstrual cycle (tmi sorry but it does work). With my PCOS I tend to not be regular and the D3 helps with that and it’s better for me than birth control pills which make me gain heinous amount of weight and make each monthly cycle last for up to two weeks, making me anemic. Not fun. But there’s so much more to Vitamin D3 than just regulating a woman’s monthly cycle and how can you be sure that you are deficient in it and what brand is better?

Well, I will not play doctor here and tell you what you should be doing. Instead I will just lay out my findings, urge you all to discuss things first with your doctor and be sure to follow his/her instructions to the letter. All I can do is encourage you all to do your own homework, read up on all the latest information available before doing anything. Now, with that said, here’s what I’ve discovered about Vitamin D3 🙂

I’m a huge follower of Dr. Mercola and get his articles by email all the time. He’s the one doctor I actually trust because he doesn’t make you feel like an idiot when you write to him with your questions. He’s all about natural remedies and taking care of yourself naturally. Doing that for myself has been a life saver. I’m not saying everyone has to do it but most certainly worth looking into if modern medicine has fallen short in helping your health issues. I may not be a svelte size 6, have an optimal metabolism, rock hard abs, and able to run a marathon, but I do feel so much better over all than I have in years!

Dr. Mercola stated in one of his articles that:

“There seems to be no end in sight when searching for the answer to that question. There’s constantly new research being published, demonstrating the health benefits of vitamin D and the health risks associated with vitamin D deficiency.

Perhaps the most telling piece of information is the fact that higher vitamin D levels significantly reduce mortality rates from ALL causes!

And it’s no wonder, really, when you consider what vitamin D really is, because it’s far more than “just a vitamin.” Rather it’s the only known substrate for a potent, pleiotropic (meaning it produces multiple effects), repair and maintenance seco-steroid hormone that serves multiple gene-regulatory functions in your body.

In fact, there’s compelling evidence that vitamin D is in fact KEY for proper gene expression.

How does it work?

Well, each cell in your body has its own ‘DNA library’ that contains information needed to deal with virtually every kind of stimulus it may encounter, and the master key to enter this library is activated vitamin D.

For example, memory ductile cells in a woman’s breast need vitamin D to access DNA that enables the response to estrogen.

So it stands to reason that without sufficient amounts of vitamin D, your cells cannot access their DNA libraries. As a result, their functions are impaired and all sorts of problems can ensue, depending on how well your cells are able to compensate for the lack of vitamin D.

This is why vitamin D functions in so many different tissues, and affects such a large number of different diseases and health conditions.

So far, scientists have found about 3,000 genes that are upregulated by vitamin D, which is remarkable when you consider the human body only has about 30,000 genes total.”

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. He went on to say, “Receptors that respond to the vitamin have been found in almost every type of human cell, from your brain to your bones, which explains why researchers keep finding health benefits from vitamin D in virtually every area they look, including:

  • Cancer
  • Hypertension
  • Heart Disease
  • Autism
  • Obesity
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Diabetes 1 and 2
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Cold and Flue
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Tuberculosis
  • High Blood Pressure
  • MRSA Infections
  • Dementia
  • Birth Defects
  • Reduced C-Section Risk
  • Infertility
  •  Melanoma (skin cancer)
  • Asthma
  • Depression
  • Osterporosis
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Schizophrenia

There’s research out there that proves that by increasing the levels of vitamin D3 could prevent diseases that claim nearly 1 million lives throughout the world each year!

Another amazing health fact about vitamin D3 is that it can detoxify the body. There are a number of health issues stemming from mercury poisoning. Vitamin D3 has been studied and found to significantly detoxify the body of mercury toxicity. It safely removes the mercury from the body by radically increasing the amount of intracellular glutathione(in other words it amps up the antioxidants in your body which will then help prevent any further damage to your cells).  Good stuff right there!

How can you get tested and treated for Vitamin D deficiency?

Dr. Mercola shares, “There are two vitamin D tests — 1,25 (OH) and 25 (OH)D. The correct test is 25 (OH)D, also called 25–hydroxyvitamin D. This is the better marker of overall D status, and is most strongly associated with overall health.  If you are at all concerned about being vitamin D deficient then please ask your doctor about the above test and further discuss your options.

Now there are plenty of brands out there to choose from, various forms to which you can take the vitamin D. I used to take it in gummy form but had to stop because it is coated in sugar which is not healthy when trying to live a more alkaline lifestyle. Back to pills I had to go. There are sprays, dots, liquids, soft gels, capsules, chewables and the list goes on. One must weigh the pros and cons of taking any form and decide for himself/herself which would be appropriate and easier to take.

Some popular brands, such as NOW Foods, Solaray, and Nature’s Life. I’ve taken NOW Foods and Nature’s Life and both are very good. It may not be the same for someone else so please take that into consideration. I would urge folks, who are interested, to read the reviews carefully before deciding on which brand to go with. Of course if you are terribly deficient in vitamin D3 your doctor may prescribe a vitamin D3 supplement of nothing higher than 10,000IU. Those are for severe cases only, this is why it’s important to be tests and to talk to you doctor about the proper dosage.

In the end, the best source of vitamin D is going outside for 15 minutes each day sans sunscreen and soak up some sunny goodness!

Hope you all have a blessed day!

Baking Soda: Going Beyond the Cookbook

Good morning everyone! Hope your day has been fantabulous so far 🙂  I have several irons in the fire here lately, coming down on the wire with a few projects and posts to share, so exciting and I can’t wait to get it up here for everyone to enjoy 🙂

Today I wanted to share some info about baking soda and all it’s usefulness. It’s not just for cooking or putting out fires, there’s so many handy dandy uses for this bitter powder. I have used it for a number of things, other than for Irish Soda Bread (that’s for another post). The most recent way I’ve used it was on a burn. Even a seasoned cook/baker as myself will have accidents in the kitchen but the best way I have found to stop the burn from hurting is to apply a baking soda paste! I know, you’re thinking back to health class and the textbook saying never apply baking soda to a burn, granted if you have burned the skin away you wouldn’t want to do that. Seek medical attention for such a burn, but for minor burns this remedy works great!

Applying a paste made out of baking soda will help to lessen the damage and relieve pain. To do this, mix 1 tablespoon of soda with 1 teaspoon of water, put the paste on the burn and wrap it loosely with a clean bandage. A baking soda bath can also be helpful. Simply add a quarter to a half cup of baking soda to a warm (not hot) bath and soak.

Since the burn was on my thumb…

Ninja Thumb hard at work!

Taking a soda bath wasn’t necessary. However, I did have reapply the paste before going to bed. Even from the first application of the baking soda paste the pain was instantly gone! I had kept my thumb on ice for a couple of hours and ever time I took it off my thumb would burn and throb. The next day the redness was minimal and the area that would have become a blister was flat. My thumb was tender for a couple of days and I noticed that my skin was peeling in that area several days later. So, for minor burns definitely try baking soda paste never again will I use an ice pack.

But the amazing uses don’t stop there. I came across an article with 75 ways to use baking soda, yet I know there are so many more! Amazon has book called “Baking Soda: Over 500 Fabulous, Fun, and Frugal Uses You’ve Probably Never Thought Of“, it’s on sale and is available with Prime two-day shipping.

I love cleaning with it too! It’s great for making jewelry sparkle, both silver and gold, no need to spend money on those expensive jewelry cleaners. I shared a simple recipe on the Night Owl Kitchen Facebook Page, so if you missed it here it is:

1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon dish detergent
1 cup water
1 piece aluminum foil

Directions:
1. Heat water in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes.
2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).
3. Pour hot water into bowl. Place salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into bowl. Place jewelry on top of foil and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry jewelry completely with soft cloth. Discard solution after use and make a new batch next time.
4. According to wire-sculpture.com, “this works well for gold-filled, brass, german (nickel) silver, and sterling silver. I have even cleaned jewelry with freshwater pearls, shell cameos and mother of pearl with no problem.”

I have used this on my silver jewelry and the pieces look brand new. I have also used it in the bathroom, especially the boys bathroom. It helps to deodorize and it’s great for freshening up the sink in the kitchen! Root Simple(click here) has some great tips to use baking soda and even some interesting ways to apply it. I especially found her application of it in the bath tub/shower informative. How many of us actually use homemade bathing products? I certainly don’t, but should, it’s a nice thought and I love buying such products from people who take the time to make them. I’m as guilty as the next person when it comes to buying products off a shelf and grumble over the soap scum and strange red residue that forms around the shower drainer. Seriously, it’s disgusting! However, Mrs. Homegrown, points out that using homemade products won’t leave a soap scum film in the shower or tub which makes for easier cleaning! I think that has sold me lol Anything that cuts my cleaning time is a good enough reason to change!

Beyond cooking and baking with it, what have you used baking soda for?
